1946 / Class of 2000 / IgG Kappa / Successful matched donor allo BMT / Updated: 5/04

I was diagnosed with MM at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, on March 10, 2000. I had terrible back pain and saw several doctors and neurologists from August '96 until I was finally diagnosed. I had received every treatment in physical therapy, epidurals, magnetic devices, tens units, etc. with no lasting relief. Finally, my local physiatrist referred me to Mayo. I was there for ten days of testing and returned home with the bad news in March.

I immediately started working with our local oncologist. At his referral, we contacted the University of Michigan to begin the process of undergoing a BMT with a "matched unrelated donor" (MUD). I was very fortunate to find a match with all six antigens in the worldwide search. I had my BMT, 9 billion donor stem cells, on May 2, 2001. I am thankful to report that I just had my three-year anniversary evaluation and all is well; no cancer cells - only donor cells. I have been taking monthly Aredia IV's locally since I returned home from the hospital.

Twelve months after my BMT, U of M contacted me with the news that my donor would like to talk to me. We had several telephone conversations and our families met in person last July at his home in Michigan. It was a wonderful experience.

I am now able to play golf and do most of the things that I used to do before my illness. If I can be of any further help, please contact me at my email address above or phone (989) 839-0012. I am now a retired school principal and have the time to help others if possible.
